Experience the Park
Things to Do
Explore Chitwan by jeep, by dugout canoe and on foot — and round out your days with the culture of the Terai.
Signature Activities
Into the jungle
Jeep Safari
The classic way into the park — open 4WD drives along forest and grassland tracks. A jeep safari from Sauraha has a very high chance of rhino and deer sightings.
Dugout Canoe
A dawn float down the Rapti River in a traditional wooden canoe, drifting past basking crocodiles, gharial and waterbirds. Often ends near the Bis Hajar Tal wetlands.
Guided Jungle Walk
A walking safari at foot-speed with trained guides, revealing tracks, birdsong and the texture of the sal forest. More atmospheric — and more demanding — than a jeep.
Birdwatching
With 500+ recorded species, Chitwan is among South Asia's premier birding destinations — best in the grasslands and around the lakes at dawn.
Elephant Breeding Centre
The government-run centre near Sauraha lets you observe domesticated elephants and calves at close range, without riding them.
Tharu Cultural Show
Evening performances of the Tharu stick dance and traditional songs — best in their community-run, authentic form.
Suggested Itineraries
How long do you need?
A guide to structuring your time, inspired by the way larger parks frame multi-day visits.
1 Day — Taster
Morning canoe on the Rapti and a guided walk; afternoon visit to the elephant breeding centre; evening Tharu cultural show in Sauraha.
2–3 Days — Classic
Add a full-day jeep safari deep into the park toward Kasara, a sunrise birdwatching session, and time to explore Tharu village life and the cultural museum.
4–5 Days — Immersive
Combine multiple safari modes, a Narayani River boat trip for gharial and dolphins, a buffer-zone homestay, and slow birding across grassland, forest and wetland.
