River & forest

Dawn

Canoe on the Rapti

A traditional dugout float past crocodiles, gharial and waterbirds as the day begins.

See domesticated elephants and calves at close range without riding.

Deep into the park

The grasslands and lakeside at dawn — prime time for Chitwan's 500+ species.

Full day

Jeep safari toward Kasara

A full-day 4WD safari deep into the park, with a strong chance of rhino and deer and the headquarters area around Kasara.

Evening

Riverside sunset

Wind down on the Rapti riverfront as the light goes gold over the floodplain.

Culture & the buffer zone

Morning

Tharu village & museum

Visit a buffer-zone village and the Tharu Cultural Museum & Research Centre to understand the people of the Terai.

Midday

Bis Hajar Tal wetlands

The "Twenty Thousand Lakes" — a Ramsar wetland of oxbow lakes, superb for a final round of birding.
